The Murmansk Region suggests that Ministry for the Development of the Russian Far East and other related federal authorities explore the issue of forming the potential cargo base for container transportation along the Northern Sea Route via the seaports of Murmansk, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and other port of Russia’s Far East. According to the press center of the Murmansk Region Government, this announced by Grigory Straty, Deputy Governor of the Murmansk Region, who participated in the meeting of the Arctic and Antarctic Council.
“Ice-free deepwater port of Murmansk is the only port in the European part of Russia to provide a short and easy access to the ocean routes. Absence of protective structures and no need for icebreaking during winter periods make it the most attractive for ship owners and convenient for handling large capacity ships”, - said Grigory Straty.
The Deputy Governor reminded that under the state programme for the development of oil & gas fields on the continental shelf of Russia’s Arсtic, the port is already an onshore infrastructure base of Rosneft and Gazprom subsidiaries. Besides, NOVATEK is creating a center for construction of superlarge marine facilities on the western shore of the Kola Bay (Murmansk Region).
Grigory Straty also suggests emphasizing the significance of implementing MTH project in full, including the construction of a container terminal, within the scheduled period.
