The Russian Federation was taking an active part in the development of the Polar Code, therefore it complies with all requirements and aspects of the Northern Sea Route navigation rules IAA PortNews correspondent cites Vitaly Klyuev, Director of the Department of State Policy for Maritime and River Transport of Russia's Ministry of Transport, as saying yesterday, 5 October 2016, at the “Polar Code and Safety of Icegoing Ships” conference organized by Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS) and PAO Sovcomflot.
According to Vitaly Klyuev the Polar Code sets forth no special requirements to vessels. Russian rules of NSR navigation fully comply with the Polar Code.
“The Polar Code sets forth no administrative requirements while our rules for NSR navigation cover such issues,” said Vitaly Klyuev.
Vessels entering the Northern Sea Route will now be obliged to provide certificates in compliance with amendments into international conventions as required by the Polar Code. NSR Administration will be monitor this compliance.
The IMO Polar Code comes into effect from 1 January 2017. It covers all aspects of polar shipping and is also applicable to ships on the Northern Sea Route (NSR).
