Northern Sea Route traffic in 2016 can reach a record-high result of 6.06 mln t, Nikolai Monko, First Deputy Head of the Northern Sea Route Administration, said at the international forum “Arctic Projects – Today and Tomorrow”.
NSR representative says that cargo transportation along the Northern Sea Route (excluding transit traffic) was 5.26 mln t as of 14 October 2016. The bulk of cargo is carried towards the Gulf of Ob, Sabetta and Dudinka ports.
According to Nikolai Monko, NSR Administration has issued 688 permissions for passing the Northern Sea Route this year (against 672 permissions issued in the same period of 2015) including 136 permissions for foreign ships.
As for transit traffic, the Northern Sea Route was used by 15 vessels (including 4 foreign ones) which carried 210,000 t of cargo.
The Northern Sea Route is the shortest water way between the European part of Russia and the Far East. Its length from the Kara Gate to the Provideniya Bay is about 5,600 km.
