Training tall ship Khersones has arrived in Sochi today, 26 April 2017, Commercial seaport of Sochi JSC told IAA PortNews.
The tall ship will take part in SOCHI Yacht Show 2017 which will take place from April 29 till May 7, 2017. During the event, the frigate will be open for public tours. Besides, the tall ship will host a photo exhibition “The Sails of Russia”.
Over 100 cadets of the Water Transport Institute named after G.Ya. Sedov (branch of Admiral Ushakov Maritime State University) are trained onboard the ship.
Khersones three-mast sailing frigate was built in 1989 in Gdańsk Shipyard, Poland, in a series of six sister ships (among which also the Mir), after the designs of Polish naval architect Zygmunt Choreń. The ship is named after the city of Chersonesus, an ancient city and archaeological site near Sevastopol.
The commissioned vessel managed by the Black Sea squad of training vessels performed training international voyages with cadets aboard. Since 2006 the ship has been laid-up with the reduction of the crew.
Khersones sailing ship is the unique vessel, which in 1997 doubled Cape Horn with the engine turned off. Cape Horn is considered ominous even among sailors.
