Wrecking of container carrier in Kaliningrad region causes leakage of 2 tons of fuel

Wrecking of container carrier Maersk Vienna (flag of Cyprus) in the Kaliningrad region resulted in leakage of about 2 tons of heavy fuel oil, press center of the regional office of Russian Emergency Ministry reports according to ITAR-TASS. The area of the spill totaled 160x30 meters. Calm sea and prompt response including placement of booms prevented the slick from entering open sea. Natalya Ivanova, head of the press center tells three oil garbage disposal vessels work at the site. According to Ivanova, no one was hurt in the accident and there is no environmental threat. On finalization of necessary response activities the vessel is to be tugged to the place of repair.

The accident happened on February 4, about 07:00 (Moscow time) in the course of mooring in the third sea basin of Baltijsk. The vessel scraped the berth, which resulted in breaking of the vessel’s side and fuel tank filled with heavy fuel oil. The hole is 80x8 cm. The crew discovered the hole only early in the morning.
