Murmansk Region Government continues interaction with the Ministry of Natural Recourses and Environment of the Russian Federation under the project on cleaning the Kola Bay waters of sunk objects which was launched in 2016, Murmansk Region Governor Marina Kovtun said at the plenary session of the 7th ecological “Protection of Environment and Sustainable Development of the Northern Territories” held in the framework of the Murmansk International Business Week, says press center of the Murmansk Region Government.
However, the Governor emphasized that the work can be only continued with the federal support.
“The issue of further federal financing of such works is under consideration since the Kola Bay is an object of federal ownership”, said Marina Kovtun.
The Murmansk Region has a special strategic status for Russia. Geographical location defined the Kola Peninsula as a priority element in ensuring the geopolitical interests of Russia in the north of Europe and the Arctic. Its non-freezing deep-water the Kola Bay became the main base of the Northern Fleet, and Murmansk sea port became the center of industrial fishing in the Barents Sea and the North Atlantic, and the starting point of the Arctic.
Today, Murmansk is the only port in European Russia with an open access to major oceanic routes. Port of Murmansk has direct access to the Northern Sea Route, that links the Atlantic to the Pacific through the arctic waters and provides access to natural resources of the Far North, Siberia and the Far East.
Murmansk International Business Week is a key business event of the region communicating Russian Arctic agenda to the international community, an arena where business, authorities and general public together pay close attention to the urgent issues of developing efficient cooperation at high latitudes.
The 7th Murmansk International Business Week (November 12-16, 2018) involved more than 3,500 participants from more than 10 countries. The programme number over 20 separate events.
