The number of floating power units (FPU) for Russia’s Arctic and other projects is to be increased from four to eight, IAA PortNews learned from three sources in the industry referring to the last week meetings in the Kremlin.

This programme has also been mentioned by Sergey Baryshnikov, Rector of Admiral Makarov State University of Maritime and Inland Shipping, when speaking at the extended meeting of Russian Transport Academy.

“The development of the Northern Sea Route and seaborne fleet will facilitate the development of inland transport. We are speaking about the Northern Delivery programme and about the construction of new ports along the NSR. To ensure their operation it has been decided to build four floating nuclear power units so that their total number increased to eight”, he said.

One more source told IAA PortNews that the programme may foresee the construction of up to 10 FPUs. Talks about a potential construction site were held with Vyborg Shipyard, he said. According to IAA PortNews’ sources, four FPUs can be deployed for the projects of Gazprom.

Investment project on development of Baimsky ore zone envisages the construction of a mining and processing plant and the related infrastructure. The Baimsky resources are estimated at 23 million tonnes of copper 2,000 tonnes of gold (64.3 million ounces).

FSUE Atomflot is to supply four upgraded floating power units (UFPU) with installed power capacity of at least 106 MWt each. The first two units are to be put into operation at the Naglyoinyn Cape by the beginning of 2027, the third one – by the beginning of 2028, the forth – by the beginning of 2031. The contract for construction of platforms for the first two FPUs was signed in 2021 with the Chinese shipyards. Outfitting will be performed by Baltiysky Zavod shipyard. Total investments into the power supply project will exceed RUB 150 billion.
