Dublin Port helps Sabang Port become one of Asia's biggest
IRELAND's Dublin Port Company has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Aceh Authority, to develop Indonesia's Port of Sabang into one of Asia's largest container ports, The Jakarta Post writes.
The port's development will reportedly be done in conjunction with the Aceh Authority, which will own a controlling stake in the joint venture.
Dublin Port's regional representative, Barnardus Djonoputro, said the group had already begun fixing existing port facilities, while upgrades for the port are due to commence in the first quarter of next year.
Sabang Port is located at the mouth of one of the world's busiest waterways, the Malacca Strait.
According to the Malaysian newswire Bernama, currently around 35 per cent of world trade passes through the waterway, while approximately 200 foreign cargo vessels pass Sabang everyday
The port's existing facilities include a 180-metre long pier, which will be upgraded to as long as a 2.5 kilometre long pier.
"We will have 15 to 25 cranes to lift the containers. The planned port will be able to accommodate two large container ships," Mr Bernardus said.
Although unable to give full details on the total cost of the investment, Mr Bernardus did say that the acquisition of the cranes alone would cost in excess of US$100 million.
