East Isle Shipyard lands contract for three escort tugs

Workers at the East Isle Shipyard have another contract to handle after Irving Shipbuilding Canada confirmed a contract to build a series of three escort tugs for Atlantic Reyser.
“It means more work for our more than 100 employees at the yard,’’ said Mary Keith, from Irving headquarters in Saint John, N.B. “We’re very pleased to make this announcement.”
Irving’s East Isle shipyard has built a number of tugs for escort operations in Saint John and the Caucedo liquified natural gas terminal in the Dominican Republic. This new contract will provide escort tugs for Atlantic Reyser for LNG terminal operations.
There are 29 Irving tugs constructed or on order, and most have been constructed in Georgetown.
The tugs are designed specifically for LNG escort and ship assist duties and are used extensively in Halifax for Panamax container ships.
The new tugs are to be delivered by August 2008.
