Maersk wins Italian contract to build and operate a new container terminal
An A. P. Moller - Maersk Group led consortium has won a concession to build and operate a new container terminal in Italy's Ligurian port of Savona.
The new facility is expected to cost $600 million of which $200 million will be invested by the Maersk-led group while the remainder is funded by the port authority, reports said.
Scheduled to be fully operational by 2012, the new container terminal is expected to have a handling capacity of around 600,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), boosting total port capacity to 850,000 TEUs.
The new facility will significantly increase capacity for the Ligurian container handling portfolio, which already boasts two of Italy's largest container ports; Genoa and La Spezia.
The new contract was said to fit with Maersk's plans to add on to regional businesses such as its current stake in Genoa's flagship Voltri terminals.
Maersk officials have expressed keen interest in Italian port privatization projects as key to advancing their presence in Italy.
