Landlocked Bolivia to build new port
Bolivia's government has approved plans to build a new port at Puerto Quijarro on the the border with Brazil. “We will make every financial effort to have these facilities built as soon as possible,” said Bolivian President Evo Morales.
President Morales said that these would be the first public port terminals in Bolivia. The $25.6 million project will see the development of terminals to handle cargo such as soya, cement, gasoline and diesel oil at Puerto Quijarro on the Canal do Tamengo, said a Lloyd's List report.
The project site is near the Paraguay-Parana river system that links Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay and Argentina. President Morales expects the first terminal, which will be handling grains, to be operational as early as February next year.
Bolivia is landlocked but does have access to the sea via the north Chilean port of Arica under an agreement with the Chilean government.
