Guangdong to promote use of RFID technology
Guangdong province intends to promote the development of logistics industry with the help of Radio Frequency Identification Devices (RFID), said Lu Jiansheng, vice director of Guangdong Provincial Information Industrial Department.
But he said RFID is still in its infancy in Guangdong, and it is a technology which faces high cost, a lack of fixed standards and low market demand.
"However, the application of RFID in logistics industry will help to improve the competitiveness of local logistics companies," said Dai Dingyi, vice president of China Federation of Logistics & Purchasing, who added that information technology will become an important "weapon" for Chinese logistics companies to meet with the challenges from their foreign counterparts.
Although the logistics industry of Guangdong has developed rapidly in recent years, local logistics companies, typically small scale operations with high costs and low efficiency, have lagged behind the foreign logistics companies, Xinhua said.
To promote the development of local logistics information technology, Guangdong has set up a RFID public technology supporting centre to provide consulting, training and problem-solving services.
Guangdong has also established the Guangdong Province RFID Professional Commission and Guangdong Province RFID Industries Alliance to promote the application of the technology.
As the use of RFID in logistics industry extends gradually, Guangdong has seen new logistics information technology products, like Shenzhen's "56tong".
After the introduction of 56tong, Shenzhen's Yantian Port not only reduced operations costs, but also improved port efficiency, a port official said.
