The Hangzhou-Ningbo Canal will be re-opened to traffic to link up with the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal by 2008 to provide a cheap environmentally friendly transport relieving pressure on roads along the Yangtze River to Ningbo.
By 2010, some 1,000 kilometres of rivers are to be opened to navigation. Zhejiang will also build container and bulk terminals along the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal and other navigable streams.
The province already has an extensive expressway network, but its river transport requires further development, said a provincial government spokesman.
