Port of Luanda wants to build new container terminal
The management of the Port of Luanda in Angola’s capital is studying the building of a new container terminal as part of an expansion project for the docks, officials said.
Silvio Barros Vinhas, chairman of the board of the Port of Luanda, speaking at a ceremony to award a contract to Sogester for the operation of a new container terminal, said new port infrastructures were needed to meet rising freight traffic.
Sogester had to wait three years to begin operating the container terminal due to the award of the concession being contested by rival bidders. The company’s shareholders are Gestão de Fundos (an Angolan state company that manages pension funds) with a 49 percent stake, APM Terminals (40 percent) and Maersk (11 percent).
The port operating concession lasts for 20 years and Sogester aims to invest US$ 53 million over the coming five years.
Sogester CEO Felix Matias Neto, said these investments would involve extending the dock, acquiring new cargo handing equipment and personnel training.
