Iran's leading port operator, Tidewater Middle East Marine Services Company, reported a throughput of 830,427 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) for the first half of this year, a 28% jump from the same period last year.
Expecting container volumes to grow further, Tehran-based Tidewater is pressing ahead with the construction of new basins and a new terminal set to triple handling capacity of the Shahid Rajaee Container Terminal from two to six million TEUs.
Also on the cards is a second container terminal, backed by the Iranian Port & Shipping Organization (PSO) Investment.
First phase development, scheduled to be operational early next year, will include an 850 metres (m) quay with 17 m depth alongside, a 70 ha container yard and eight super post-Panamax gantry cranes.
Second phase development, scheduled for completion after 2009, will add on about 2 kilometres of quay length and a 140 ha container yard.
