30 new berths will be constructed by 2015 at Busan New Port, according to Shin Jin-Sun, public relations officer from Busan Port Authority (BPA); eight will have cold ironing system by early-2009.
''The cold ironing system will be implemented when the berths go into operations,'' Shin told Bunkerworld.
Cold ironing allows a ship to switch off its engines and plug into shore-side electricity, virtually eliminating emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulphur dioxide (SO2), particulate matter (PM) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) while ships are at berth.
''At present, ship emission is not a hot issue in Busan or South Korea,'' Shin said.
''Busan is surrounded by mountain ranges and air quality is not so serious as those of China or other countries.''
