India's Jawaharlal Nehru to get special economic zone

India's Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) has announced plans for a 'port-based' special economic zone (SEZ).
Reports say that the SEZ will be developed by the JNPT with the aim of creating synergy with current port operations.
The proposed SEZ would serve as an 'export processing zone' on some 1,200 hectares of surplus land which the JNPT owns.
The JNPT has officially invited Expression of Interest (EOI) bids from engineering consultants to prepare a master plan for the development.
The EOI is also calling on interested parties to advise the JNPT regarding the scope and structure of the proposed SEZ.
In a notice inviting the EOIs, JNPT said that the consultant will 'primarily advise the port as to the types of activities/business best suited for this SEZ/EPZ and will assist the port in seeking the relevant approvals of the State and Central governments'.
Reports say that Jawaharlal Nehru had previously acquired 2,500 hectares of land to meet its long-term requirements.
Some land has been allocated for lease to private players to develop tank farms.
Jawaharlal Nehru, India's top container port, currently handles some 50 million tonnes of cargo per year and is said to be embarking on a major expansion and upgrading project.
Some $1.78 billion may be spent over the next five years to develop port infrastructure, including the deepening and widening of its main navigational channel.
New container handling equipment has been earmarked for purchase, and basic infrastructure will also be constructed for the port's fourth container terminal.
