Imperial Logistics International to build terminal in Duisburg and reactivate an existing terminal in Krefeld

Imperial Logistics International, part of the South African concern Imperial Holdings, is to build a new trimodal terminal at Logport II, in Duisburg. The 3.5 ha terminal will have four railway lines and a 310 metre quay, both served by a gantry crane. The idea is to create a rail-barge connection for cargo to/from the westerly North Sea ports. Imperial is also thinking of expanding regional links, following the example of the Westfalen-Xpress, which has been running for a year now. The terminal should be operational by spring 2009.
This October, Imperial will reactivate an existing trimodal container terminal in Krefeld, with almost the same surface area as that in Duisburg. This will involve an investment of € 3 billion. The terminal will focus primarily on local traffic and, thanks to its favourable location on the Rhine, can be used for consolidating cargo from/for destinations upstream.
Neska Group, Imperial’s division for container activities, will also operate a 5 hectare rail container terminal, which is under construction in Cologne. In June, it strengthened its intermodal operations by acquiring Danes Container Trucking and the inland container shipping operator Alcotrans. In total, Neska manages 37 hectares of container terminals in Cologne, Düsseldorf and Duisburg. It hopes to have doubled the combined throughput, currently more than 1 million TEU, within three years.
