Guangzhou port ups container volume to 5.99 million TEU in H1

Guangzhou port's container throughput growth in the first half now ranks first in the world, Xinhua reported.
Statistics show Guangzhou port handled 5.99 million TEU in the first half of this year, a strong growth of 36.4 per cent year on year, the report said.
The strong growth of Guangzhou port was not only seen in container business for foreign trade, but also in container business for domestic trade, the report said.
The performance of Guangzhou port became even more apparent when other major ports made excuses for their slowdowns, pointing to a global economic slump, an appreciating yuan and trade restrictions from Beijing, the report said.
Guangzhou growth was strongly supported by the Nansha port area, which handled 76.2 per cent more containers compared with the same period of last year, the report said.
Guangzhou port is being upgraded from a feeder port to a major container port and it's expected to handle 11.4 million TEU this year, the report added.
Nansha port area has had the capacity to handle the largest container vessels in the world and the 100,000-tonne Cosco Asia and a 12,000-TEU Maersk ship are calling Nansha regularly.
After the completion of Nansha's third-phase channel expansion project, the channel capacity of Guangzhou port will be further upgraded to handle 150,000-tonne vessels, the report said.
