Shanghai first half box volume rises 10.4pc, Yangshan soars 42.8pc

Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG) handled 13.8 million TEU during the first half of 2008, a year-on-year increase of 10.4 per cent, Logistics Week reported. During this period, the group's transit containers via waterway cumulated to 5.27 million TEU, up 16.1 per cent, taking up 38.1 per cent in Shanghai Port's throughput total. Overall tonnage grew 10.2 per cent to 190 million tonnes. Foreign trade cargo went up 12.9 per cent to 128 million tonnes. The nearby Yangshan Port Area handled 3.89 million TEU in this period, a surge of 42.8 per cent over the same period last year. Waterway transit containers lifted in the port area take up 48.7 per cent per cent in Shanghai Port's throughput.
