Spain container traffic at standstill in 1Q/2008

Container traffic through Spanish container ports in the first quarter of 2008 increased by just 0.05% compared to the same period of 2007. The total container traffic reached 3,146,258 TEU in 1Q/08 compared to 3,144,797 TEU in 1Q/07, according to the latest figures from Puertos del Estado. The biggest container port, Algeciras - where the port authority has now approved the Hanjin Shipping concession (TTI) to develop a new container terminal on the outer Isla Verde - logged a throughput of 800,840 TEU (-1.93%).
Throughput at Valencia increased by 8.16% to 782,888 TEU and at Barcelona, the third biggest container port, it was down by 0.32% to 623,328 TEU. Container traffic at Bilbao increased by 3.22%, while Las Palmas saw a 2.37% fall.
As regards breakbulk/general and project cargoes, overall throughput increased by 4.3% to 49.5 Mt - the main ports being Algeciras, Valencia, Barcelona, La Palmas and the Balaerics. Dry bulk traffic increased by 4% to 26.8 Mt, with Gijon heading the pack at 4.32 Mt, followed by Tarragona (3.71 Mt), El Ferrol (2.38 Mt), Cartagena (1.59 Mt), Valencia (1.46 Mt), Almeria (1.34 Mt) and Bilbao (1.24 Mt).
Liquid bulk volumes increased by 6.31% in the first quarter to 38.3 Mt, led by Bilbao (5.58 Mt), Cartagena (5.57 Mt), Tarragona (4.74 Mt), Algeciras (4.69 Mt) and Huelva (3.15 Mt).
