Major Japanese shipping group Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line) is to take a 5% in a shipyard under construction in a suburb of Quanzhou, Fujian Province, China. Titan Quanzhou Shipyard is intended to be the largest repair dock in China with capacity of 250 vessels per year. It will feature four ultra-large dry docks (two of which can accommodate 300,000dwt class VLCCs or VLOCs as well as two slipways, ten repair berths, painting workshop and mechanical-electrical workshop.
Construction of the yard started 2004 and while primarily aimed at repair the facility is also intended for newbuildings and offshore engineering. Partially opened in 2006 the yard has already delivered four 7,000-9,000dwt bunker tankers.
Ship repair will commence in mid-2009 at repair berths as floating dock and will be in full operation from 2010. K Line has secured certain repair slots, primarily for large vessels, as a “strategic alliance” partner.
