Muuga’s Container Terminal to cost over EEK 1 bln

Port of Tallinn has received four bids for the general contracting of the new terminal to be built in the East side of the Muuga Harbour.
Postimees writes that the cheapest bid was EEK 1.2 bilion and the most expensive bid was EEK 1.45 billion.
A representative of the Port of Tallinn said that the bidders were both Estonian and foreign companies. The Port is currently negotiating with the world’s fourth largest port Ningbo in China to use it for its container business.
This summer The Ningbo Port in China sent two experts to Port of Tallinn to oversee preparations to build a large container terminal, and take part in planning and design of the future container terminal.
Port of Tallinn and Ningbo Port signed the memorandum of understanding on building a large container terminal in Muuga in January. The supervisory board of Port of Tallinn has also approved the strategy to make Port of Tallinn a major regional container centre with capacity to handle up to 4 million TEUs of containers a year.
The plan is to jointly develop a container terminal in Muuga. The terminal will also serve as the distribution centre of Chinese goods.
Ain Kaljurand, chairman of Port of Tallinn, said at the signing ceremony that the contract was important for the whole region and that Port of Tallinn has been attempting to reach an agreement with the Chinese for years.
In the first phase the new container terminal in Muuga would have a capacity to handle 1 million TEUs of containers. The terminal would be the largest distribution centre for Chinese goods in the Baltic Sea region and would serve Northeast Russia, Scandinavia and the Baltic states.
"The objective is to reach 3 to 4 mln TEUs a year," said Kaljurand. The construction would take between 1.5 and 2 years and the terminal could be opened in 2010.
Ningbo is located near Shanghai and is the world's fourth largest port by cargo volume.
