Nigeria urged to review or scrap shipping and port charges

Nigeria's Federal Government Committee on Complaints on Arbitrary Increase in Local Shipping Charges by Private Terminal Operators is demanding the abrogation of a number of port charges.
The committee also called in a report for an urgent review of numerous other charges that have not been approved by the appropriate government agencies.
The report emphasised that arbitrary increases in local shipping and port charges had reduced the competitiveness of Nigerian ports, said Nigeria's Punch on the Web.
It said that according to the report, private terminal operators and shipping agents have unilaterally and arbitrarily increased different rates.
The committee is said to have recommended the abrogation of the safety or ISPS code charges, administrative charges on laden containers, container cleaning equipment and maintenance charges, as well as the Custom Examination Charge, tally charge, and the transfer charge on cargo to bonded terminals unless requested by the consignee.
The charges that should be reviewed, according to the report, include the labour charge, custom examinations, transfer charges, terminal handling charges and documentation charges among others, the article added.
