The opening ceremony of first in the history of St. Petersburg ocean container service between South America and Russia had been earlier held in St. Petersburg.
Container carriers will be operating en route Guayaquil (Ecuador) - Panama Canal - Rotterdam - Bremerhaven - St. Petersburg. The ships will call once a week at the Big Port of St. Petersburg. The six containers carriers are all of the ice-class and will be operating the line year-round, regardless of weather conditions. This will help shorten the delivery of goods and eliminating the need for transshipment in neighboring countries and, consequently, may decrease the customs value of transported cargoes. Some experts say the factors will significantly boost imports from Latin America, especially flowers, pineapples, fruit concentrates, coffee, cocoa, seafood. According to preliminary calculations by the Danish company that opened the new line, 180.000 tons of bananas a month will imported to Russia.
Ecuador has been currently the second largest importer in volumes passing through the Baltic Customs. In February, the volume was almost 12% of total imports. Fruits imports from the country are almost 26% of total inbound cargoes, more than 354.000 tons a month.
