Danish shipping has full speed ahead and the Danish shipping companies are now expecting to secure record-high foreign exchange earnings in 2008. Previously, expectations were set to approximately EUR 25 billion but the increase in the US foreign exchange rate has resulted in growing optimism.
Foreign exchange earnings of this size will contribute with net EUR 3-4 billion to the balance of payments. However, this is not sufficient for Danish shipping whose ambition is to become much bigger.
Danish shipping’s next great ambition is that Denmark will be the world’s largest seafaring nation in the long term.
Presently, Denmark has approximately 6 per cent of the world’s gross register tonnage whereas Japan has 13 per cent.
The minister of shipping, Minister for Economic and Business Affairs Bendt Bendtsen (K) fully supports the business.
