German container firm to open Plainfield site

Plainfield has lured another international corporation to its industrial parks. Schütz Container Systems, a division of the Germany-based Schütz Group, has leased space for a light manufacturing operation in an existing warehouse and distribution building in the Airwest business park.
The company is expected to use the new facility to make plastic shipping containers for liquids and recycle used containers to be reused.
The company hasn't announced the details of the project, although it is disclosed in plans filed with state and town planning and building authorities.
The company is expected to move in and be ready for operations about November. The move is expected to create about 50 jobs.
Schütz has leased about 135,000 square feet or about one-third of Airwest Building 11 at 2375 Reeves Road. It is one of several developed by Opus North Corp.
Schütz will share the 361,000-square-foot building, which opened a year ago, with BFS building products. BFS is a roofing operation of the Bridgestone and Firestone companies.
Outside storage of materials or supplies usually is prohibited in Plainfield's industrial parks. However, the town Board of Zoning Appeals recently approved construction of two storage tanks or silos to be located next to the Schütz building.
Ryan Albright of Opus North told the town planners that the silos, which will contain plastic pellets for making plastic shipping containers, will be well hidden from view. They will painted the same color as the building and will be 38 feet tall, about two feet shorter than the main building.
He also said the water and other utilities used in the processes in the plant are to be recycled in a closed system, so there would be little or no environmental discharge from the operation.
Schütz is an international corporation with three main divisions, including energy systems, industrial packaging, and machine tool construction and systems engineering.
The global company has plants and other operations in several countries. In the U.S., Schütz has plants in Georgia, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio and Texas, according to the company's Web site.
John Cumming, vice president of development for Opus North, said the decision by Schütz to move to Plainfield "is another testimony to our area's strength in logistics."
The town boasts 30 million square feet of industrial, warehouse and distribution buildings, mostly built in the past decade.
Cumming said 2007 was a successful year for leasing the speculative space and 2008 has been better. "We surpassed all of 2007 in the first quarter of this year, and the (industrial real estate) brokers are saying the second half of this year could be even better for leases," he said.
