Bremerton shipyard to pay $56K fine for EPA violations

The Puget Sound Naval Shipyard has agreed to pay $56,000 for hazardous-waste violations at its facility in Bremerton, according to an agreement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The violation was issued under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, which regulates hazardous waste.

In January 2009, inspectors from the Washington State Department of Ecology and the EPA found violations of hazardous-waste management laws at the Bremerton shipyard.

The violations included the improper storage of a compound, hexavalent chromium, which can cause respiratory illnesses and increases the risk of lung cancer.

The inspectors also found an open drum of paint solvent near a door in a storage shed at the pier, which is on Puget Sound. The open container posed a risk of contaminating the Sound if spilled.
