Port of Kotka posts a 40.7-percent rise in freight traffic, to 8m tons in Jan-Sept.

Throughput of the port of Kotka (Finland) in January-September 2010 surged by 40.7% compared with the same period last year, up to 8 million 15 thousand tons, the Port Authority statistics said.
Container traffic in the reporting period increased by 13.8%, to 289,077 TEUs, while Ro-Ro cargo transshipment volumes declined significantly - by 40% to 11,373 units. In Jan-Sept, exports fueled the nine-month strong results - the port handled 4,257.574 tons of outbound goods, or 41,7% up from Jan-Sept, 2009. The number includes 1,726.404 tons of exported paper (-3.5%). Inbound goods flow jumped 2,3 times as much - up to 2 million 136 thousand tons.

In September, the port of Kotka handled nearly 1 million 43.7 thousand tons of cargo.

Port of Kotka is one of the main export ports in Finland, which is part of a logistics hub, providing trade between Finland and Russia. Major cargoes transshipped at the port are timber and pulp.
