In September, the port handled 2,459,000 tons of cargo, a 7.4-percent rise month-on-month.
Klaipeda port's container throughput in September totaled 25,560 TEUs (a 32.3% gain from Sept., 2009), the volume of general cargo rose 27.2%, to 822,482.1 tons. Transshipment of oil through the Butinge terminal increased by 28.5% to 899,968.8 tons, handling of Ro-Ro cargo also rose to 20,662 units (+38.2%).
State-run Port of Klaipeda, the northernmost ice-free port on the East coast of the Baltic Sea, is the largest Lithuanian transport hub, connecting sea and inland traffic lanes. Currently, there are 17 stevedores, shipyards, other companies operating at the port and providing ranged forwarding and logistics services. Trade flows via Klaipeda port in 2009 fell by 6.3%, to 27,866 million tons.
