German exports declines by 0.4 percent in August

German exports declined in August by 0.4 percent from the previous month, official data showed on Friday, the second consecutive month that Europe's biggest economy has shipped fewer goods abroad.

The value of exports from Germany, the world's second biggest exporter after China, came to 81.8 billion euros (113.7 billion dollars), the federal statistics office said.

Seasonally- and calendar-adjusted figures provided by the Destatis office also showed that German imports increased by 0.9 percent to 70.1 billion euros.

The unadjusted German trade surplus dropped to nine billion euros from 13.5 billion in July, and the current account surplus was nearly half the July figure at 4.6 billion euros in August.

Economists polled by Dow Jones Newswires had forecast a much stronger trade surplus of 12.6 billion euros.
