According to Rádio Moçambique, the Malawian government’s aim is to secure the regular supply of oil products to the country, specifically diesel, petroleum and lighting fuel.
Malawi currently imports 93 percent of its oil products via the ports of Beira and Nacal, in Nampula province, northern Mozambique, in tanker trucks, whilst the remainder arrives from Dar-es-Salam, in Tanzania.
Using the new oil pipeline Malawi expects to receive over 900 million litres of fuel per year, which, according to Energy Minister, Grain Malunga, will increase the country’s fuel reserves to three months, as compared to the current ten days to two weeks.
