Malawi to build oil pipeline to port of Beira in Mozambique

The government of Malawi has launched an international public tender for construction of an oil pipeline from the port of Beira, central Mozambique, to ensure the country’s fuel supply, Rádio Moçambique reported Thursday Expected to cost US$140 million, along with the pipeline between the port of Beira and Nsanje district in the far south of Malawi, the project includes construction of fuel stores in several regions of the country.
According to Rádio Moçambique, the Malawian government’s aim is to secure the regular supply of oil products to the country, specifically diesel, petroleum and lighting fuel.
Malawi currently imports 93 percent of its oil products via the ports of Beira and Nacal, in Nampula province, northern Mozambique, in tanker trucks, whilst the remainder arrives from Dar-es-Salam, in Tanzania.
Using the new oil pipeline Malawi expects to receive over 900 million litres of fuel per year, which, according to Energy Minister, Grain Malunga, will increase the country’s fuel reserves to three months, as compared to the current ten days to two weeks.
