Ust-Luga port handles Subaru cars first shipment

The Main Highway from S.Korea called at the port of Ust-Luga (Leningrad oblast) on October 10 carrying the cargo of Subaru autos. The 22 imported cars were unloaded for the first time at the multi-purpose handling terminal Yug-2, the Ust-Luga Company press service said. Ust-Luga Company is the port’s customer-developer.

The Yug-2 transshipment terminal was designed for handling RO-RO cargoes, including the imported autos, containers and general freight (oversized and heavy cargo). The 1phase Yug-2  was launched in June 2008.

To date, the Yug-2 handles the inbound autos of Hyundai and Kia carmakers, the Malmo-Hanko-Ust-Luga service is operating for transportation of Toyota cars. In the near future the Ust-Luga authorities, having talks with major ocean lines operators, seek to launch a service connecting the Ust-Luga port to the Scandinavian and other European ports. The company eyes the possibility to work with trade exports flows.

In 2009, some 16,775 cars were handled and stored at Yug-2 terminal. Year to date, there have been about 40,000 units passed via the transshipment complex. By the end of this year, the cargo turnover at the terminal is projected to reach 60,000 autos.
