A Mongolian ship with Russian-Ukrainian crew sinks in the Kerch Strait

The Mongolia-flagged Basil bulker en route from Odessa to Georgia carrying 3,000 tons of scrap metal cargo sank early this morning, Oct. 11, while entering the Kerch Strait from the Black Sea in the territorial waters of Ukraine, According to the Ukraine Rescue service of the Crimea, as of 11:00am (LT) 9 crew members have been saved from the ship: eight Russians and one Ukrainian. Overall, there were reportedly 12 crew members on board: 10 of Russia nationals and 2 of Ukraine’s.

3 rescue ships (2 Russian-flagged tugs and one of Ukrainian flag) that were nearby rushed to the emergency site in the area of Cape Keese Aul. At the time of the accident the seawater temperature was 14 degrees Celsius, with rough sea 3.5-4pts.

The salvage services are actively searching for surviving crew members. The operation is complicated by weather conditions in the are that do not allow aircraft support
