Port of Riga posts a 0.2-percent throughput drop for Jan-Sept., 2010, to 22.3m tons

Freight traffic volume via Free Port of Riga (Latvia) in January-September 2010 fell 0.2% as compared with the same period last year, to 22 million 322.5 thousand tons, the Port Authority statistics said.
The volume of bulk cargo shrank by 11.2% to 12 million 778.6 thousand tons, liquid bulk cargoes - by 6.2%, to 4 million 624 thousand tons, while general cargo surged 61 1%, up to 4 million 919.9 thousand tons.

The largest share of total port’s cargo turnover was in the segment of coal cargo (+38,2%) and petroleum products (+20,6%). Timber cargo volume reached 15.6% of total turnover, container volume – 8.4%, fertilizer - 4.6%.

Freeport of Riga lies on both banks of the River Daugava (Western Dvina), the total area of the port – 6.348 ha, length of berths – 13.818 m, maximum draft of vessels at berth – 12.2 m. Transit cargoes make up 80% of overall freight traffic, carried to / from the CIS countries. In 2009, the Port of Riga posted a 0.5-percent gain in freight volumes, to 29.72 million tons.
