A labor union representing French dock works Monday called for an open-ended strike to protest planned reforms to the French pension system. The dockworkers' federation of the Confederation General du Travail union noted that it had called for open-ended strike action by freight handling and port administration workers on Jan. 1, and says it is extending the call to rail and airport freight handlers, cleansing, river transportation and all other ports.
Work-to-rule measures planned by the CGT include no overtime or exceptional shift working. A work stoppage for one hour a day, and closing ports over the weekend.
Strike action by public and private-sector employees to protest the planned pension system changes are expected to cause widespread disruption to transport and other services.
