Throughput of Latvian ports is down 3.4% in Jan-Sept, to 45.5m tons

Eight-month freight flows through Latvian ports fell 3.4% from Jan-Sept, 2009, to 45.5 million tons, the Baltic Course reports citing the Ministry of Transport of Latvia. Overall, in the reporting period the ports of Riga, Ventspils and Liepaja handled 44.4 million tons of cargo.

Of the three leading ports only Liepaja Port posted a slight 0.4-percent gain in Jan-Sept.

An earlier report said, the Free Port of Riga handled in nine recent months 22.3 million tons of cargo, or 0.2% down from the same period a year earlier. Ventspils transshipped 18.9 million tons (-8.6%), Liepaja - 3.16 million tons (+0.4%).

The nine-month total freight traffic volume includes 21.43 million tons of bulk cargo (-2.4%), 15.53 million tons of liquid bulk cargo (-19.5%) and 8,53 million tons of general cargoes (+45.6%).
