Throughput of the Big Port of St. Petersburg is up 14.7% to 42.55m tons in Jan-Sept

Cargo turnover of the Big Port of St. Petersburg for the first 9 months of 2010 increased by 14.7% compared with the same period last year to 42.55 million tons, PortNews reports citing Association of Sea Commercial Ports (ASOP).

The Port of St. Petersburg is located on the islands of the delta of the Neva river, in the Neva Bay, the eastern tip of the Gulf of Finland. The Big Port of St. Petersburg territory includes the Neva River delta and the Neva Bay, Kronstadt and dams. The Port of St. Petersburg’s icebreakers escort ships ensuring safe winter navigation. According to ASOP there are 30 stevedore companies operating at the port. In 2009, the port’s throughput totaled 50.4 million tons of cargo. There were 21.619 calls at the port (10.786 inbound ships and 10.833 outbound ships).
