Nine-month throughput of NCSP down 3.9%, to 62.67m tons

Freight flows passing via Novorossiysk Commercial Sea Port Group (NCSP) in January-September 2010 amounted to 62 million 671.4 thousand tons, or 3.9% down from the same period a year earlier, the Group’s press service reports.

In nine recent months the volumes of bulk cargo decreased by 5.4% versus the same period last year, to 41 million 734.8 thousand tons. Transshipment of crude oil and petroleum products at Sheskharis Terminal shrank by 3.4% compared with 9 months of last year (the decline was partially balanced by an increase in transshipment of fuel oil). The expected market decline of export duty on crude oil and petroleum products in October vs this September has had a negative impact on the volume in September.

In Jan-Sept. 2010, bulk cargo volume fell 11.1% y-o-y, to 9 million 942 thousand tons, while mineral fertilizer soared 48% from Jan-Sept. 2009, up to 1 million 551.7 thousand tons, thanks to the cargo sales opportunities on the market. Transshipment of raw sugar also gained 21.2% versus Jan-Sept. last year, to 1,336,000 tons.

In the reporting period, the volume of iron ore continued recovery - for 3 quarters of this year the stevedore handled 1 million 268 thousand tons, while the average monthly volume of the cargo traffic in August-September this year made up 300,000 tons.

Nine-month volume of handled grain dropped by 14 percent from Jan-Sept, due to the Russian grain exports ban effective from August 15, 2010. Year-to-date, the company handled 5,736,800 tons of grain.

Transshipment of general cargo during the period was down 0.3% vs last year’s figure. However, handling of non-ferrous metals, timber cargo, perishable goods rose in Jan-Sept. by 28.3%, 29.9% and 85% respectively. There was a 8.4-percent decline in the segment of ferrous metals, to 6 million 198.9 thousand tons.

Container throughput at the Group’s container terminals in the reporting period soared 89.2% in Jan-Sept, to 325,800 TEUs.

Commenting on operating results for the nine months of 2010, CEO of NCSP Igor Vilinov noted that without considering the impact of two major factors on handled volumes (the grain exports ban, and the volatility of crude volume), "one can speak of the strong transshipment volumes in tandem with an increasing share of such a priority cargo as containers, which volume actually rose twofold”.

Novorossiysk Commercial Sea Port Group is the largest Russian port operator. The NCSP shares are listed on the Russ. RTS and MICEX (ticker NMTP), on the London Stock Exchange (in the form of GDR, ticker: NCSP). In 2009 the NCSP Group’s throughput amounted to 86.5 million tons. Consolidated revenues of the Group (IFRS) for 2009 totaled $675.1 million, net income - $252,2 million.
The NCSP Group incorporates the following stevedore companies: Novorossiysk Commercial Sea Port OJSC, Novorossiysk Grain Terminal OJSC, Novorossiysk Shipyard OJSC, NCSP Fleet OJSC, NovorosLesExport OJSC, IPP OJSC and Baltic Stevedoring Company.
