Maersk opens new Spain - Morocco service

Maersk Sealand Line, one of the world's largest shipping companies, has confirmed the opening of a new route from the port of Vigo to port terminals in Las Palmas, Tenerife, Bilbao and Agadir (Morocco).
This is a large "boost for Galician companies wishing to export or import their goods to these destinations," said a source from the shipping company. So far, the exchange of containers, mostly frozen fish, was made from Vigo to the terminal port of Algeciras.
The new commitment made by the shipping company is to preserve weekly services, which will be carried out by their boats named Balkan, Alexander Maersk and Medontario.
Vessels are expected to depart from the port of Algeciras to Vigo, Bilbao, and back to Algeciras, Tenerife, Las Palmas and Agadir (Morocco), and end the rotation at the port in Andalusia, where they will begin a new journey identical to the northbound journey, reports the newspaper La Voz de Galicia.
According to the chairman of the Port Authority of Santa Cruz in Tenerife, Pedro Rodríguez Zaragoza, "The launch of the new Maersk Line is an important step to reach the tricontinental platform."
"We have come to Tenerife, where our market share is not relevant to our global market. Our idea is to reach the world better and faster so that we have significantly improved our services," said the general manager of Maersk Spain, Kent Hagbarth, after introducing the Atlantic Service line.
He also stressed that the ships made the transfers from one to another on the same port once a week, especially on Fridays.
The company invested more than EUR 20 million in this initiative, but Hagbarth said: "we are not going to have higher revenue, but have instead adjusted to market demand."
For Rodriguez Zaragoza, this is "a qualitative leap", which if continued could be "the embryo" of Tenerife as a platform to the tricontinental area, as published in La Opinión de Tenerife.
Since January, Maersk has had an office in Santa Cruz in Tenerife. And in February decided to re-establish the port of Vigo in the ocean route to Namibia.
After almost four years of having excluded the Spanish port from the Algeciras-Namibia route, the owner has restarted the service for frozen fish.
