Rotterdam Port shows strong recovery

Recovery remains strong at the port of Rotterdam as it saw its container throughput increase 17% to 8.4 million teu in the first nine months of the year, compared to the same period last year.

Its ro-ro transport sector recorded an increase of 6% to 13 million tonnes, attributed to a slight recovery in the British economy, one of its key trade lanes.

The port predicts ro-ro growth could be slightly higher in the fourth quarter, partly due to the deployment of larger ferries.

Hans Smits, CEO of the Port of Rotterdam Authority, said: “The growth is levelling off, but is still slightly higher than expected. The port continues to profit from strong European exports, for which a lot of raw materials also need to be imported.

Total throughput is now exactly at the 2008 level. “It is exciting to see whether or not we will succeed in climbing out of a deep trough to achieve a record in just one year,” Smits said.
