The work, to be completed in about three weeks in December, will coincide with a roughly $1 million project to repair the gantry system at both docks of the ferry. The ferry will be out of service during that time, said Chris Kauffmann, the Jacksonville Port Authority’s interim director.
About $800,000 for the gantry repairs came through federal funding, with the authority funding the rest. BAE Systems received the sole-source contract because it was the only regional company able to take on the repairs of the MV Jean Ribault, and transporting it for repairs outside of Northeast Florida would have been too costly.
