Balga port project must be reviewed, Rosmorport says

The construction project of a port on the peninsula Balga (Kaliningrad region) requires rethinking, Igor Rusu, Rosmorport’s CEO said on Tuesday at a briefing in St. Petersburg, PortNews correspondent reported.
According to him, the project developer “Federal Directorate of government customer for development of maritime transport programs" failed to substantiate the projected cargo traffic. The approach canal to the projected port should be 10 km while the depth in this area is only 1,5 m. So, to deepen the canal at least to 12 meters the project should include large-scale dredging, which requires huge investments.

According to calculations of the developer the optimal capacity of the new container terminal at the port should reach 12 million TEUs a year, the total turnover of 131.5 million tons. The expected volume of investments in the port project was announced at 263bn to 314bn rubles.
