CMA CGM contributes 20% to Port Klang's throughput volume
CMA CGM Group, the world's third biggest liner, hopes to maintain if not better, its growth rate achieved last year for container volume at Port Klang this year. The French Liner handled 2.3 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) last year, contributing 20 per cent, to Port Klang's total throughput volume.
CMA CGM & ANL Malaysia Managing Director, Simon Whitelaw said in a statement today: "We don't want to be too optimistic for 2011 as we are quite cautious due to too much capacity.
"However, we hope to achieve, the same growth of 13 per cent as in last year."
CMA CGM, which has made Westports its mega transshipment hub in this part of the world, has grown from 20,000 TEUs in 1998 to surpass the two million TEU mark last year.
"It is an unbelievable growth and success in Westports and Port Klang. We are also very privileged to be part of Port Klang's growth as a leading port in the world," said Simon, adding, CMA CGM would not rest on its laurels and never be complacent.
Simon was speaking after receiving a special appreciation from Port Klang Authority (PKA) Chairman, Datuk Lee Hwa Beng, for CMA CGM's achievement of surpassing two million TEUs in Port Klang.
Meanwhile, Westports Chief Executive Officer, Ruben Gnanalingam said Port Klang has seen CMA CGM growing to become the third largest container shipping company in the world, since making Westports its home in 1998.
"We have been in the front line, watching their growth in terms of container volume. Ranked number one in France, CMA CGM is also Westports number one customer," he added.
To further strengthen its position at Port Klang, CMA CGM's first dedicated On Dock Depot (ODD) in Asia, officially opened in 2009 at Westports.
The ODD facility is aimed at providing good customer service to the French liner's customers, especially for the local market, which has grown tremendously over the past few years.
