German port of Kiel 2010 throughput up 19.3% to 5.8 million tonnes
The German port of Kiel recorded its best year ever in terms of cargo handling in 2010, according to media reports.
Statistical data from the port showed that throughput reached 5.8 million tonnes- a rise of 19.3% on figures recorded in 2009.
According to Lloyd's List, Managing director Dirk Claus attributed the rise in numbers to the positive development of ferry services.
“Thanks to our partners we have been able to win additional market shares not only on Scandinavian routes, but also on Russia and Baltic service markets,” he said.
Claus stated that the port was forecasting a throughput of 6 million tonnes in 2011.
The port recently announced that it is also forecasting a record year in its cruise shipping sector after underlining its position as Germany’s leading cruise port in 2010.
The number of calls reached 136, with 341,000 passengers boarding or leaving at Kiel last year.
