Increased imports and exports via the largest port in the Nordic Region
Last year was a good year for the Port of Gothenburg. The recovery that commenced during the latter half of 2009 has continued. Freight tonnage increased by 11 per cent last year to almost 44 million tonnes.
According to the port's message, in total, 880,000 containers were shipped through the port – a rise of 8 per cent on the previous year. This is a new record for container volumes.
The record for oil was also broken with an increase of 8 per cent. The number of ro-ro units rose by 10 per cent reaching an annual volume of 564,000 units. The largest increase was for vehicles with 233,200 units passing through the port last year – up 48 per cent on 2009. Despite this, ro-ro and vehicle volumes still have some way to go to reach pre-financial crisis levels.
"The recovery in the economy is reflected very clearly in the volumes for 2010. We are retaining and reinforcing our position as the foremost freight hub in the Nordic region," states Magnus Kårestedt, chief executive of the Port of Gothenburg.
