Handling of cargo at Yuzhny port (Ukraine) in January-October 2011 increased by 28.6 percent from a year earlier, to 19.88 million tons. The ten-month volume of cargo is up 13.5% over the planned figures, the company's press office reported.
Year-to-date, transit goods volume soared by 53.9 percent to 9.5 million tons. In the reporting period, the port was handling primarily ore, mineral fertilizers and coal, the report said.
In January-October Yuzhny port handled 759 ships and 153,604 railcars.
This October, the port handled 2.5 million tons of different cargoes, 78 ships and 14,622 railcars.
State-run Yuzhny Merchant Sea Port founded in 1978 is located on the northwest coast of the Black Sea, in the ice-free Small Adzhalyksk (Grygoryivsky) estuary, 30 km northeast of Odessa. The Port is connected to the sea by a 3km-long 14-m-deep canal so pilotage service is required for inbound and outbound vessels. In 2010, Port of Yuzhny posted a 2.1% growth year-over-year to 18.22 million tons of different cargoes.
