Drayage companies in Southern California by the end of the year will remove from service the final 280 trucks that do not meet the standards contained in the Los Angeles-Long Beach clean-truck programs, the Journal of Commerce reported.
“Jan. 1, 2012, will mark the last phase of a progressive ban that has succeeded in replacing the entire drayage fleet in the largest port complex in North America,” the Port of Long Beach said.
Beginning on Oct. 1, 2008, the ports began to ban old, polluting trucks from harbor service, and each year the ban got progressively tighter. By the end of the year the entire Los Angeles-Long Beach harbor trucking fleet of about 11,000 trucks will comply with the standards set in the clean-truck programs by being of model year 2007 or newer.
“We set an example for the entire industry,” said Long Beach Harbor Commission President Susan Andersen Wise. “Everyone at the port can be proud of this accomplishment, and we are grateful to all our partners in the trucking industry and the environmental community who helped us get there,” she said.
