Ports of Auckland to close some facilities due to strike

New Zealand Port operator Ports of Auckland said it expects to temporarily close some port facilities from December 1 as part of plans to deal with industrial action, reported Dow Jones Newswires.

The company received a second strike notice on Wednesday from the Maritime Union of New Zealand after collective bargaining talks broke down.

"We believe it is unlikely that the union will lift the strike notice so we have had to plan ahead on that basis," senior communications manager Catherine Etheredge told Dow Jones Newswires.

Union officials weren't immediately available for comment.

Ports of Auckland chief executive Tony Gibson said in a statement the Bledisloe and Fergusson container terminals, and associated road and rail services, would be closed from 2230 local time on December 1 to 2230 December 5.

Both container terminals are located in the Port of Auckland. The company also operates the Onehunga Port, also in the Auckland area, and an inland port in south Auckland.

Gibson said at this stage four ships appeared likely to divert to the Port of Tauranga and two could miss Auckland from their shipping schedule entirely. The total number of containers affected is likely to be between 6,000 and 7,000, he said.
