Sea Port St. Petersburg handles ELVs to be shipped to South America space center
Loading of two expendable launch vehicles (ELV) to be transported to Guiana Space Center (French Guiana) ended on September 14, 2012 at Ro-Ro Terminal of JSC Sea Port of Saint-Petersburg, the stevedoring company said.
Containers with sets of modernized launch vehicles "Soyuz-ST" were transshipped from train to roll trailers, and then through slipways of Berth Number 37 were delivered to the MN Colibri.
The handling operation was performed by gantry cranes of lifting capacity of 40 tons.
This is the fifth cargo of equipment for Kourou, shipped via the terminals of Sea Port Saint-Petersburg, the company said, under the long-term cooperation agreement between Russia and France for the design, development and use of launch vehicles.
"Our specialists regularly perform handling of oversized and heavy lift cargoes. Sea Port Saint-Petersburg owns equipment, which enables us to handle cargoes weighing up to 300 tons, our modern railway infrastructure allows receiving rail vehicles of all kinds and types, as well as storage space to accommodate the heavy-lift shipments," the report said.
JSC Sea Port St. Petersburg (part of UCL Port, a sub-holding, managing stevedoring assets of UCL Holding) is the largest operator, providing ranged services for handling of all types of dry bulk cargo in Big Port St. Petersburg. The company operates modern specialized terminals for handling Ro-Ro cargo, imported vehicles and metals. In 2011, cargo throughput at Sea Port St. Petersburg was 7.4 million tons. The Company invested RUB 319 million in upgrade and expansion of terminals and infrastructure.
